2 school records broken at regular-season track finale

Jelden tops own pole vault record; Koellner blasts discus record

“Every day, the kids fought really hard, trying to improve so they could get to state,” praised Holyoke track and field coach Corey Koberstein after the May 10 regular-season finale at the Sterling Invitational.
It was the last meet in which times/distances could be turned in for potential top-18 marks among 2A competitors to earn the right to compete at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood May 16-18.
Two Holyoke school records fell at Sterling. Emily Jelden broke her own pole vault record for the third time this season, vaulting 9’4”, and freshman Correy Koellner busted the 119’7” discus record by almost three feet when she recorded a 122’4” throw.
Taeryn Trumper ran her season best time of :12.67 in the 100-meter dash to win that event for the Dragons.
Other first-place finishes for the girls at Sterling were nabbed by Koellner in the shot put, Jacky Mosqueda, Jelden, Jessy Mosqueda and Trumper in the girls 4x100 relay, and Yeidi Juarez, Rylee Oakley, Emma Oakley and Ashley Rahe in the girls 4x800 relay.
Boys first-place honors were earned by Aaron Sierra in the 300-meter hurdles and Luis Chafino in the pole vault.
So many local tracksters were sitting in the top 25, where a little bit of difference here and there could have meant a state qualifying effort, noted Koberstein.
Kylie Purkeypile ran her season best in the 100-meter hurdles at Sterling. Her time of :17.65 is the 16th qualifying time. However, it was called wind-aided and did not count for qualifying times. Instead, her previous best time left her in 23rd.
The girls throwing team has been competing at a high level all season. “I’m proud that they’re taking everything they’ve learned from coach (Dani) Coons and are applying it,” said Koberstein.
Koellner, Emali Torres and Lauren Herman swept the top three marks in the shot put again at Sterling last week, and are also ranked in the top five for state. Koellner and Herman also have top-six marks for discus.
Along with the state qualifying throwers, Victoria Race in the shot put and Shianne Willmon in the discus pushed the top-25 real hard.
