3A schools no match for girls in season opener

“It was a good start to the season.” Coach John Baumgartner was nothing but smiles when he reported the Holyoke High School varsity girls basketball team brought home the tournament trophy from the Canine Classic at Highland High School in Ault Friday-Saturday, Dec. 6-7.

The Lady Dragons started off their season with a 2-0 record after smashing Frontier Academy 55-27 Friday and beating Liberty Common 34-29 Saturday. Both are 3A schools, and Holyoke is 2A.

“I’m happy where we’re at,” said Baumgartner.

With no games until Saturday this week, the team is focusing on conditioning, knowing they need to get in better shape to be able to compete with tough teams on the schedule later in the season.

It looked like the first half of the Frontier Academy game was going to be a shutout, said Baumgartner, until Frontier Academy pulled off two 3’s in the second quarter.

Holyoke led 24-0 at the end of the first — with half of the points earned by Kristin Vieselmeyer’s six 2-pointers.
