4 Lady Dragons earn all-conference at league meet

Four girls earned all-conference honors by nabbing first-place finishes at the Lower Platte Activities Association league track meet at Yuma on Tuesday, June 15.

The relay team of Audrey Talavera, Elly Brown, Tayla Martin and Correy Koellner topped the competition in the 4x200 meter relay in their first time running the race this season.

Koellner was also named all-conference after her wins in the long jump, shot put and discus Tuesday.

A smaller league joined LPAA for the meet, but the athletes were placed separately. In LPAA competition, the Holyoke girls finished in third place out of eight teams with 94 points. The Dragon boys earned 69 points and ended the day in fifth out of eight teams.

Coach Corey Koberstein said that the Holyoke athletes did not compete in as many events as they usually do. This allowed them to save some energy to focus on the events that they were aiming to better times and distances in order to qualify for the state meet.

The heat was “excruciating,” he said. The team has been concentrating on keeping everyone healthy, hydrated and safe when competing in hot weather conditions.
