4 wrestlers place in season opener at St. Francis, Kansas

    Jesus Trejo and Luis Chafino placed third, while Jessy Mosqueda and Anthony Rojo finished fourth in their respective weight divisions to open the Dragon wrestling season at the St. Francis, Kansas, Gabel/Jenkins Invitational Saturday, Dec. 2.
    Eleven Dragons entered the tournament, and coach Dusty McConnell said they did a great job and never gave up.
    “The first outing of the year gages where we need to be and helps target what we need to work on,” noted McConnell. “Now we need to grow from what we learned at last weekend’s tournament,” he added.
    At 138 lbs., Trejo was 3-1 for the day to take third place. Chafino was 4-1 in the 152-lb. bracket, where he placed third.
    Mosqueda was 1-3 for fourth place at 106 lbs., and Rojo was 1-2 for the day to take fourth at 113 lbs.
    Deacon Dittmer also earned two match wins at 152 lbs., going 2-2 for the day.
    With the absence of official assistant coaches at the tourney, McConnell noted appreciation for Billy Sonnemaker who stepped up to help with coaching.
    As a team, the Dragons placed 11th with 32 points. Colby, Kansas, won the tourney with 128 points, followed by Goodland, Kansas, 124, Burlington 107.5, Wray 107, Sterling 98, Atwood-Rawlins County, Kansas, 77.5, Norton, Kansas, 69, WaKeeney-Trego, Kansas, 62, Leoti-Wichita County, Kansas, 47, St. Francis, 39, Holyoke 32, Tribune-Greeley County, Kansas, 17, and Brewster, Kansas, 11.
