6 pool records broken; Holyoke wins meet

Many of Holyoke’s fiercest swim team supporters doubled as volunteers for the opening meet of the 2019 Northwest Kansas Swim League season. Though the parents, family friends and community members were busy keeping the home meet running smoothly, they took brief moments to celebrate numerous first-place finishes, six pool records broken and an overall team win for Holyoke Swim Club.
Holyoke finished the meet with 345 points, followed by Goodland, Kansas, 301; Burlington 184; Colby, Kansas, 179.5; Wray 154.5; Oberlin, Kansas, 82; and Oakley, Kansas, 53.
Swimming in the 15-18 boys division, Keegan Shaw set a new record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 0:52.86. He also broke a 2004 record set by Holyoke’s Kurt Rumold in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.67.
Teagan Martin broke two records in the 11-12 boys division. In the 100-yard individual medley, his time was 1:23.08 — an astounding 11 seconds faster than the previous record. In the 50-yard backstroke, his time was 0:36.39.
Tayla Martin set a new record in the 13-14 girls 100-yard backstroke with a 1:09.19.
Ridley Brinkema broke a 2002 record in the 8 and under boys 100-yard IM with a time of 2:05.62.
