76ers semi-pro football team forming in northeast Colorado

A semi-pro football team called the Colorado 76ers is being formed in northeast Colorado as part of the Colorado Football Conference.

The CFC consists of the Mile High Eagles, Colorado Springs Flames, Steel City Rage, 303 Thrashers and now the Colorado 76ers. The CFC has been in existence since 1987 and is the nation’s longest-running semi-pro football league.

Head coach of the 76ers will be Gene Essman Jr., who will double as defensive coordinator. Fort Morgan native Reid Kahl will be offensive coordinator, as well as assistant head coach. Also on staff is Akron native Craig Parker and Nate Marshall.

Two informational meetings for players and potential players to meet and ask questions will be held. The first is scheduled from 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Fort Morgan High School gym located at 709 E. Riverview Ave. in Fort Morgan.

A second meet and greet will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Sam & Louie’s, 310 Main St. in Sterling.
