Akron wins both in Saturday doubleheader

Holyoke High School baseball took to the road for the team’s first away games Saturday, April 2. The hosting Akron Rams won the first game 9-8 and the second 23-13 in six innings.

Coach Jimmy French said, “We still have some things to work on, but there was a lot of progress.” He praised the three new pitchers, Ty Sandquist Dirks, Cody Maloney and Reid Sprague, who pitched well across the two games.

“We had a lot of good at-bats, a lot of good baserunning, some mistakes that we were able to learn from that I don’t think we’ll make again,” French said. “I think that we were disappointed to not come away with a win in either of those games, but we expect to be able to turn these missed opportunities into wins the next time around.”

From French’s perspective, the Dragons did a really good job of keeping the pressure on and making sure that the other team really had to earn the win in Saturday’s first game.

The Rams took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Back on the offensive, Michel Perez put HHS on the board with a run in the second inning. Tyson Mosenteen, who started out on the mound for the Dragons, kept his cool and ended the inning with a strikeout. Given the loaded bases and full count, that was key to keeping the score close.
