Area teams claim state basketball titles

Basketball season wrapped up for another year over the weekend with the conclusion of the state basketball tournament.

Familiar names finished at the top of the heap.

In Class 2A girls, No. 2 Sedgwick County topped No. 1 Merino 47-43 in the championship game.

Sedgwick County, runners-up to Holyoke in 2022, beat No. 7 Rangely in the quarter finals 47-33, then took down No. 3 Burlington in the semifinals 50-48.

Merino beat No. 9 Wiggins, which beat Holyoke in districts, in the quarterfinals 43-39, then picked up a 12-point win over No. 12 Heritage Christian in the semifinals.

In Class 1A, third-seeded Briggsdale, last season’s runner-up, beat No. 1 McClave 53-37 in the championship game.

Colorado Springs Christian, the third seed, beat The Vanguard School 57-41 for the Class 3A title.

The Class 4A championship went to No. 1 Holy Family, a 49-44 winner over No. 2 D’Evelyn.

In Class 5A, the title went to No. 2 Roosevelt with a 54-44 win over No. 4 Windsor.

Grandview, the 11th seed, won the inaugural Class 6A championship over No. 4 Monarch 38-28 to give the Wolves their second-straight state championship.

On the boys side, Wray, seeded fourth, claimed the Class 2A state championship with a 45-41 win over No. 7 Sanford. The Eagles’ win keeps the top team in Class 2A in Yuma County after Yuma’s state championship in 2022.
