Baseball maintains perfect record in first week

Having swept doubleheaders against both Wray and Akron in the first week of the season, head coach Sam Distefano was thrilled for the team’s great start. “We were able to overcome some miscues and keep a perfect record,” he noted.
As for the Saturday, March 25, home games against Akron, he commented that the offense was really clicking and the defense played outstanding, making tough plays look easy. Dragons beat the Akron Rams 5-4 and 6-0 in last weekend’s games.

Akron took an early lead, scoring two points in each of the first and second innings in the first of two games against Holyoke, bringing the score to 4-0. Starting pitcher Caleb Deaver slowed them down in the third, with a three up, three down inning,
Dragons got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, when Brenden Kage hit a double and was brought home by Deaver, earning an RBI.
Going into the fifth inning with a score of 1-4, Seth Watson made a great catch in center for the first out. After two outs, Jesus Trejo came in to pitch, and the Dragons held the score with a strikeout.
Back at bat, HHS scored three runs in the fifth, when Gunnar Kroeger hit a double and Tristan Sullivan earned an RBI. The teams were tied at four runs after five innings.
After Trejo pitched 1 1/3 innings, facing four batters, striking out two and walking one, Brendan Mayden took the mound to start the seventh inning, facing only three batters and striking one of them out. The tied score kept suspense high until the bottom of the seventh. Kroeger started the Dragons off with his second double, and Sullivan hit a single down the third base line to bring him home, earning an additional RBI.
Sullivan had a total of three hits for the Dragons, and Distefano applauded him for coming up with a lot of big hits to help out the team, ultimately making the game-winning one.
