Senior Karen Nuñez puts up a shot in Thursday’s 42-17 win over Caliche on the Dragon court.

Basketball girls record 2 league wins heading into final week of play

Top spots still up for grabs in very competitive district conference

With two conference games on the line last week, Holyoke girls varsity basketball team recorded two more W’s before heading into the final week of the regular season.
HHS defeated Caliche 42-17 last Thursday, Feb. 9, and Wiggins 28-20 Saturday, Feb. 11, both during home matches.
Another game in Fleming Friday made it three games in three days. The Dragons lost that game 34-45 against one of the top three teams in the smaller Colorado 1A division.
Holyoke’s overall record sits at 13-4. Their league record is 4-1 with only Yuma and Wray left to play this week.
“Our league is really good this year,” said coach John Baumgartner. It all boils down to these final games. Only three will move on from districts. “We’ve got to play our best basketball right now.”

    Holyoke 42, Caliche 17
Last Thursday, the Lady Dragons breezed by Caliche, a team of girls who are traditionally very aggressive on the court.
“After the first quarter, we really controlled the tempo,” said Baumgartner.
Only eight points in the first quarter was followed up by double digits for the Dragons in the next three. Meanwhile, Holyoke’s defense kept Caliche to single digits in all four quarters and only seven field goals.
One of Baumgartner’s goals was to keep Caliche off the free-throw line, something he felt the girls accomplished on Thursday.
Another goal — to connect with the basket — was evident in Holyoke’s 19 field goals and the 42-17 win.
Taeryn Trumper led the Dragon scoring effort with 12 points from six 2-pointers. Tara Krueger and Grace Dille both contributed 10 points for HHS.
In other stats, Dille led rebounds with 14, Krueger had three blocked shots, and Emily Jelden totaled eight assists and two steals.
