Baumgartner earns 300th win

     Besides being a feel-good game ahead of districts, HHS girls varsity basketball team’s Feb. 12 matchup against Burlington marked the 300th win for coach John Baumgartner, who began his career coaching Holyoke athletes in 1989.
     Baumgartner downplayed his own role in leading Holyoke JR/SR High boys and girls basketball teams to victory time and time again, instead crediting student athletes and staff, some of whom used to play under Baumgartner.
     “It’s more about them than me,” he said. “I’ve been very fortunate and very blessed to stay here for as long as I have.”
     Baumgartner coached football, basketball and track at the junior high school for his first five years and helmed the HHS boys basketball team for 16 years. The 2018-19 season is his third with the girls team.
