Bombers punch ticket to World Series

Hailing from northeast Colorado, the Buckley Bombers baseball team won the Midwest Plains regional tournament July 21 and earned a trip to Mobile, Alabama, to play in the Babe Ruth World Series Aug. 2-9.
The team is made up of 16-18-year-old athletes from Holyoke, Haxtun, Wray, Wiggins, Akron, Ovid, Sterling, Stoneham and Chappell, Nebraska. The Bombers are coached by Marcus Kammer and Sam Distefano of Holyoke and Alan Coffin of Haxtun, and their home field is in Chappell.
Eight teams from the Midwest Plains region converged in Charleston, Missouri, July 18-21 to play for the regional title. In the first three days of pool play, Colorado beat Watford City, North Dakota, 11-2; Wellington, Kansas 5-3; and Southeast Missouri 9-3. That put the Bombers first in their pool going into Sunday’s single-elimination championship bracket.
There the Bombers played Parsons, Kansas, the No. 2 seed from the other pool. Colorado won 9-0. In the other first-round game, Southeast Missouri beat Charleston, Missouri, 5-2. That evening, the winning teams faced off in the championship game. Colorado beat Southeast Missouri 7-5.
