Boys basketball isn’t hindered by young roster

It’s a time of transition for the Holyoke High School boys basketball program, and new head coach Marcus Kammer is glad to help be a part of it. Looking at the returning letterwinners — and the roster as a whole — the 2018-19 team is on the young side. However, Kammer referenced this year’s HHS football team as evidence that young players aren’t necessarily a detriment to a good season.
Five juniors returned this year after lettering in the previous basketball season. They are Slaten Burris, Caleb Deaver, Fabian Gonzalez, Mason King and Blake Mosenteen. Though basketball sees only five teammates on the court at a time, Kammer said the success of a team really depends on its depth.
That’s where other returning and new players, including a huge freshman showing, come in.
They are seniors Cole LeBlanc, Isaiah Gifford and Colby Purkeypile; junior Alexis Vega; sophomores Aaron Sierra, Erick Marroquin, Alec Sprague, Isaiah Houghtelling, Alejandro Rojas, Jalen Hunter, Cameron Skager and Joey Beckner; and freshmen Miles Sprague, Ethan Johnson, Kaison Kinnie, Michel Perez, Carlos Legarreta, Cade Killin, Jaime Avila, Ivan Ponce, Emmanuel Vasquez, Mason Vernon, Marco Mendoza and Gage Sprague.
