Boys basketball season begins at Corridor Classic Tournament

Holyoke High School boys basketball has a mostly new varsity team this season, and while the Dec. 1-2 Corridor Classic Tournament in Byers showed some of the team’s inexperience, it also revealed their resilience.
On Friday the Dragons fell 57-24 against Strasburg, and on Saturday they lost to Byers 59-39. However, coach Scott Dille proudly said that his team played hard and didn’t quit, regardless of the situation. That’s a quality he said will carry them a long way.
Both games had glimpses of what is possible for this year’s team, and Dille is looking to build on those moments and continue to improve. Coming back after the weekend, he said, “I have no doubt in my mind that these kids will come ready to work today and for the whole week and will get better each day.”
Saturday evening the Vanguard School beat Strasburg 73-66 in a close game for the tournament victory.

Getting the first game of the season under their belt was an important step for the Dragons. It served to help the coaching staff know how to proceed with a new team.
Strasburg posted 17 points in the first quarter, while Holyoke’s Andy Dominguez scored the team’s first six. Going into the second quarter, Strasburg’s shots kept dropping, and they held a 33-point lead at the half.
Holyoke managed to slow their opponents down in the second half, but the damage was done, and Strasburg came out on top.
Dominguez led his team with 14 points, making two 3-pointers and eight of his 14 free throws. Overall, Holyoke shot 63 percent from the foul line, while Strasburg boasted 83 percent.
