Boys basketball wins 2 to start season
Dragon basketball started the season in fine fashion last week after defeating St. Francis, Kansas, 56-31 on Friday, Dec. 3, and Dayspring Christian 62-45 on Saturday, Dec. 4.
“I was pretty happy with how we played,” coach Colbey Stumpf said, acknowledging that the team gave a lot of effort. “Overall, we’re off to a good start, and I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season will hold.”
Stumpf noted that there are some schemes that the team needs to improve on, and the players will put an emphasis on defense, specifically boxing out, getting their hands up and keeping opposing players in front of them, and rebounding.
Holyoke 56, St. Francis 31
Starting the season on the road didn’t stop the Dragons from getting an early lead in their first game and keeping it. They scored 10 points in the first quarter while holding St. Francis to only four. Ethan Johnson hit three shots from beyond the arc in the second quarter to help expand Holyoke’s lead to 24-10 at halftime.
The Dragons stayed hot in the second half, adding 19 points in the third and 13 in the fourth to win 56-31.
Johnson led Holyoke with 22 points on four 2-pointers, four 3’s and two free throws. Cash Weber scored 11 points on four 2’s and a 3-pointer. Johnson also had four assists and three steals to lead the team.
