Boys beat Wray 58-49 in final regular-season game

Feb. 16 marked a hard-fought victory over Wray for the Holyoke High School boys basketball team. The 58-49 win Friday bolstered spirits after the Dragons suffered a 65-35 loss to Yuma last Tuesday, Feb. 13.
Last week’s games were the end of the regular season, and Holyoke boys went into the District 2 tournament ranked No. 3. That set them up for a game against No. 6 Haxtun on Feb. 20 for the first round of district competition.

In the last regular-season game of their high school careers, Holyoke’s seniors started Friday’s game against Wray. Coach Scott Dille commented that, “senior night is always an emotional night. It was nice for our seniors to get to play together.”
In the first quarter, Holyoke scored 13 points and held Wray to just nine. Going into the second quarter with the lead, the Dragon defense stepped it up a notch. Offensively, Anthony Beltran saw a great quarter. At the half, the HHS lead was extended to 26-16.
Holyoke struggled to get points on the board in the third period, and Wray took advantage of the opportunity, pulling ahead 35-33. Fortunately, the Dragons came back in the final quarter, scoring a whopping 25 points for a 58-49 win over Wray.
