Boys defeat Haxtun, fall to Limon

Dragon basketball had two road games last week, beating Haxtun 55-51 on Friday, Jan. 21, and falling to Limon 61-50 on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Coach Colbey Stumpf said he thought the boys battled really well in both games but noted that they need to continue to work on putting four solid quarters together every game.

He added that the team will work on maintaining intensity and not being lackadaisical on defense. Offensively, they’ll be working on off-ball movement and screens as well as different offensive sets.

Holyoke 55, Haxtun 51

Holyoke and Haxtun kept it close in the first quarter, with the Dragons taking a 12-10 lead. They outscored the Bulldogs 19-14 in the second quarter to lead 31-24 at halftime.

Holyoke expanded its lead by five more points in the third, leading the Bulldogs 44-32.

Stumpf said the Dragons seemed to let off the gas a bit in the game’s final quarter, when the Bulldogs scored 19 points to the Dragons’ 11, but Holyoke’s lead was enough for the 55-51 win.
