Boys drop to 6-6 on season

Boys varsity had a challenging week of basketball, losing 60-55 to Haxtun on the home court Tuesday, Feb. 23, and at Wray 88-49 on Friday, Feb. 26.

The losses move Holyoke’s record to 6-6 with only two games remaining in the regular season.

Coach Marcus Kammer said he is still looking for the team to put a full four quarters together for a complete game offensively and defensively.

He was pleased to note that the Dragons got off to a quicker start against Haxtun, something Holyoke has been trying to do at the beginning of games.

Kammer said they were prepared for a tough game against Wray on Friday night, calling them a high-intensity and high-scoring team that was also ranked first in Colorado Division 2A. He said Holyoke had turnovers in the game, but they also forced Wray to turn over the ball too. He said the plan was to try to take away Wray’s inside game, but the Eagles still showed they could score from distance.

“They’re deep and a tough team to beat,” he said. “They really force you to play their type of basketball.”

Holyoke 55, Haxtun 60

The first quarter was closely contested, with the Bulldogs outscoring the Dragons 15-12. The back-and-forth atmosphere remained in the second quarter, with Haxtun taking a 26-22 lead at the half.

The Dragons shot the ball well from behind the arc in the second half, sinking five 3-pointers to keep the game close. Haxtun led 58-53 with less than two minutes to go, ultimately coming away with the 60-55 win.

Kammer said he would have liked to have seen the Dragons make more of their short shots, especially early in the game. He went on to say that turnovers late in the game also made the difference.

“If we could have gotten a few of those shots to fall early, it would have been a different ball game,” he said. He also noted that Haxtun’s defensive pressure caused the Dragons to have troubles moving the ball around.

Cash Weber led the Dragons with 18 points on four 2-pointers, three 3’s and one free throw. Wyatt Sprague scored 17 on four 2’s, two 3-pointers and three free throws.

Miles Sprague led with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Miles and Wyatt Sprague each had five assists to lead the Dragons, and Wyatt had five steals.
