Boys season ends at regional championship

After defeating No. 19 Byers 47-43 on Friday, March 4, No. 14 Holyoke fell to No. 3 Sanford 61-39 in the regional championship game at Sanford on Saturday, March 5, to end the Dragons’ season.

Coach Colbey Stumpf said that overall, the season was pretty successful. He noted that he put players into new roles, and they were able to grow within those roles throughout the season.

He said the seniors really stepped up, played their parts and helped the Dragons have the season they did. “It was a great group of seniors to coach my first year,” he said. “Between their leadership and basketball knowledge, they really made it easy for me. I’m really happy with the way the seniors in particular stepped up.”

Stumpf was also pleased with the good varsity minutes that Holyoke underclassmen played this season. With the team losing eight seniors, he pointed out that there will be lots of spots to fill and chances to earn a starting place on the varsity team next year, and he said he looks forward to building on what the team accomplished this year when next season arrives.

Dragons come back in fourth quarter to top Byers

Holyoke came out ahead in a low-scoring first quarter against Byers, leading 8-7. The Bulldogs outscored the Dragons 15-12 in the second to lead 22-20 at halftime.

After an even third quarter in which both teams scored eight, the Dragons found themselves trailing 30-28 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Holyoke senior Miles Sprague was not about to let the season end, and he scored 12 fourth-quarter points to help the Dragons top the Bulldogs 19-13 in the final period and lead them to the 47-43 win.
