Boys show discipline in 48-38 win at Sedgwick County

Dragon basketball put another one in the W column Dec. 4 when the boys traveled to Julesburg to play the Sedgwick County Cougars. At times it looked to be quite the close game, but Holyoke finished ahead 48-38.
“It was a good reset from our last game against Highland and did show we improved on things that were missing last week,” coach Marcus Kammer said.
Things started out slow, but in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game, Blake Mosenteen was the driving force behind the Dragons, scoring nine of their points. That, combined with points scored by Mason King and Fabian Gonzalez, put Holyoke ahead 15-12 after one period. Defense came up big with some turnovers out of the full court press, which resulted in some easy buckets, Kammer explained.
In the second quarter, HHS began to pull ahead more, thanks in part to foul shots made by King and Ethan Johnson. By halftime, the Dragons had extended their lead to 29-20.
Back for the third quarter, Holyoke’s defense kept all but two of the Cougars from scoring. On the offensive end, they just kept adding to the scoreboard, posting 12 more points before the period ended.
In the repeated acts of desperation characteristic of a team trailing in the fourth quarter, Sedgwick County started racking up the fouls late in Tuesday’s game. Without so many chances for Holyoke to score some free throws, it may have been a much closer game. As it was, the Dragons scored seven more points and finished the game ahead 48-38.
From the line, HHS made half of the 26 attempted shots. The Cougars made five of eight for 63 percent.
Holyoke’s top scorers against Sedgwick County were Mosenteen with 13 and King with 12. Mosenteen made five field goals and three free throws. Leading in rebounds were King and Caleb Deaver with five apiece. Mosenteen led in both assists and steals, posting two of each, and Gonzalez led with two blocks.
Aside from a couple of minutes in each half of the game, the Dragons showed their discipline for a big team win. “We played good defense and took advantage of opportunities our pressure created,” Kammer said.
