Chafino 1 round short of placing at state

Just one round from placing in the 2A Colorado State Wrestling Championships, Luis Chafino now knows just how hard he needs to work for next year, said Dragon coach Dusty McConnell.
It was a great state mat experience for the sophomore’s first appearance in the state tourney, as he won two matches before being eliminated. That taste of victory was sweet, and Chafino knows that working toward next year’s Big Show begins now.
Also wrestling well at the Feb. 15-17 state championships was junior Jesus Trejo, competing at 138 pounds.
McConnell noted that while Trejo was eliminated from competition Friday, he knows it’s a tough tournament and he just keeps getting better every year.
All Dragon wrestlers deserve congratulations, said McConnell, and he is proud of the team’s improvement over the season. The coach acknowledged the fans for their support and said he looks forward to next year.

Chafino 2-2 at state
Chafino got off to a great start on the state mats, winning a 6-5 decision over John Mall senior Trystan Estrada.
Chafino scored first on a takedown, but the match was soon tied 2-2 on Estrada’s reversal. Chafino reversed him, but his opponent then escaped for a 4-3 Holyoke lead after one period.
A slower second period saw a 4-4 tie going into the third. Chafino scored two on a reversal, then lost one for stalling, but claimed the one-point victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
