Chafino 4th at 145 lbs. at Frederick

Dragon wrestler Luis Chafino picked up Holyoke’s only medal when he placed fourth at 145 pounds at the Frederick Invitational Saturday, Jan. 13.
After losing in the semifinals, Chafino injury forfeited his final match, noted coach Dusty McConnell.
Overall, the Dragons did a great job at Frederick, according to McConnell. Tough competition such as was seen at the tourney builds confidence and prepares wrestlers for the fast-approaching regionals, added the coach.
Going into the tournament, McConnell said that he told the wrestlers, “This is just a big practice for regionals, so that’s what you’re preparing for.”
Three weekends of wrestling are on the schedule prior to the Feb. 9-10 regionals at NJC in Sterling.
While Chafino was the only placer in last weekend’s tournament, several others earned match victories for a good day on the mats.
Mesa Ridge won the tournament with 233 points, followed by Valor Christian 160.5, Loveland 152.5, Ralston Valley 130, Frederick 122, Thomas Jefferson 119, Skyline 110.5, Mountain Range 97.5, Erie 97, Holy Family 80, Fairview 58, Boulder 62, Strasburg 37, Golden 34, Northridge 33, Standley Lake 33, Silver Creek 32, Holyoke 26.5, Niwot 22.
