Chafino claims champion honors at Brush Invite
Luis Chafino won the 160-lb. championship at the Brush Invite Saturday, Jan. 5, to lead the Dragons in their first match of the new year.
Jessy Mosqueda earned a third-place finish at 106 lbs., while fourth-place medals were received by Jesus Trejo at 145 and Michael Ramos at 170.
Only nine teams competed in the tourney, but coach Dusty McConnell said it was a good one to go to after the long holiday break. “It was good to get some mat time,” he added.
“From here on out, it will only get tougher,” said McConnell, citing the countdown to girls regionals Feb. 2 and boys regionals Feb. 15-16.
Loveland won the Brush tournament with 175 points, followed by Yuma 138.5, Brush 124, Strasburg 71, Highland 55, Holyoke 53, Kiowa 49, Palmer 43 and Resurrection Christian 39.
