Chafino wins in wrestling invite

Led by senior Luis Chafino’s 170-lb. championship, the Dragon wrestlers opened the season at the St. Francis, Kansas, Gabel/Jenkins Invitational Saturday, Dec. 7.

Coach Dusty McConnell said it was a great weekend for the team comprised primarily of freshmen and first-year wrestlers. Holyoke scored 42 points to place ninth with a very, very young team, said McConnell.

Other place-winners last Saturday were Kevin Hermosillo at 160 lbs. and Jadon Frost at 285, both finishing fourth in their weight divisions.

McConnell added that they now know the competition, so they know how to prepare for next week’s action.

“We’ll keep building from this tournament,” said McConnell, emphasizing, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish the season.”

He was extremely pleased with the great representation of parents and fans who showed up in St. Francis to support the team.
