CHSAA designates 4 seasons; football, volleyball moved to spring

Four high school sports seasons for 2020-21 were designated by Colorado High School Activities Association as approved by the state’s COVID response team Aug. 4.

Adjustments for Holyoke sports in what was formerly the fall sports season include moving football and volleyball seasons to start in late February/early March, shortening the girls softball season and continuing with boys golf.

Students, parents and communities have waited with much anticipation to see what might be allowed as a result of the coronavirus regulations. No CHSAA-sanctioned activities have been conducted since the state basketball tournament was canceled after the first day of play March 12.

CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green called it a celebration last week when boys golf started practice Aug. 3 and competition Aug. 6.

“The Governor’s COVID response team has approved the season for the 2020-21 competitive season,” Blanford-Green said last week. “Our association has accepted their decision and will work to make it happen, because at the end of the day it is about providing opportunities for Colorado high school students. It is about providing social interaction opportunities whether in a practice or a competitive setting.
