Despite ‘curveball’ season, Tayla Martin secures 2 top-10 finishes at state swim meet
Last weekend, Feb. 10-11, Tayla Martin, Summer Martin, Addie Goldenstein and Aly Lock represented the Holyoke High School swim team at the state meet at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton. The four competed in two relays, and Tayla and Summer each swam in two individual events.
Throughout the course of the season, the team faced its share of ups, downs and curveballs. The weather kept the Holyoke swimmers from competing in as many meets as they had originally hoped to, but as their coach Emily Krogmeier put it, “The girls battled hard and never lost sight of the goals they set for the season.”
For being such a small team, Holyoke certainly had a showing at the state meet of which they deserve to be proud.
Tayla earned seventh place in the 50-yard freestyle finals with a time of 0:25.65. In the 100-yard butterfly, she finished 10th in the finals, clocking a time of 1:02.05. Summer placed 15th in the 200-yard freestyle finals with a time of 2:10:05. In the 500-yard freestyle finals, she finished 20th in 6:06.12.
Rounding out Holyoke’s individual events, Goldenstein competed in the 200-yard individual medley. She clocked 2:37.10 in the preliminaries.
Holyoke’s 200-yard medley relay finished 21st in preliminaries, clocking 2:05.04 and just missing the chance to advance to the finals. The HHS 400-yard freestyle relay was disqualified in the preliminaries.
