Dragon golf tested at Fort Morgan tournament

Quail Dunes Golf Course in Fort Morgan presents some obstacles to navigate, and the Sept. 10 Fort Morgan tournament was the first true test of the season for the Holyoke boys team, according to coach Nick Flaa.

“The native grasses surrounding the fairways and greens were extremely penalizing and chewed up several shots from Holyoke golfers,” Flaa explained. He added that the course is a snapshot of what the regional course (Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora) will be like.

“Many of the courses we play, such as Holyoke, if you miss the fairway, you may just be out in an open field and have a shot. But at Fort Morgan, you were penalized for those same missed shots,” Flaa said.

Ty Dirks led the way for Holyoke with a 97, placing 36th out of 63 varsity golfers in the eight-team tourney. Flaa said he had several solid holes but had some trouble on the 17th and 18th that set him back a bit.
