Dragon offense on fire Saturday

Holyoke High School girls varsity basketball team gave a large Holyoke crowd something to talk about when they blew away Sedgwick County in the home opener Saturday, Dec. 14.

Good offensive shooting gave the Lady Dragons double digit scores in all four quarters and a big 63-36 victory over the Cougars.

Coach John Baumgartner said the Holyoke girls were really pushing the ball up the court, and some easy shots early in the game gave them a good boost of confidence.

Kristin Vieselmeyer put up seven of Holyoke’s 11 points in the first quarter, and Sarah Razo’s one 2-pointer and two 3s helped the Dragons to 15 points in the second quarter and a 26-15 lead at halftime.

Baumgartner was especially pleased with the offense in the second half, noting the girls made 15 out of 21 attempted shots.

Holyoke scored 21 points in the third quarter, including one 2-pointer and two 3s from Shianne Willmon, and Vieselmeyer made eight of Holyoke’s 16 points in the final quarter.

Baumgartner said the team has some things to work on defensively, but he noted they were in better shape than the prior weekend.

Holyoke made six out of 11 free throws for 55% accuracy — something that Baumgartner wants the team to focus on improving in the coming weeks.

Saturday’s individual stats have Vieselmeyer leading the score sheet with 23 points, including 10 2-pointers and three for four from the line. The sophomore made it a double-double with 14 rebounds.

Vieselmeyer and Lauren Herman had one blocked shot apiece. Emily Jelden topped the list with 10 assists and five steals.
