Dragon softball goes 1-3 in Brush tournament
The Holyoke Dragons were one of 12 teams that played in the Brush softball tournament Sept. 8-9. Holyoke won one game against Yuma, 4-1. In its other three games, the team lost 13-0 to Lyons, 15-0 to Limon and 7-4 to Akron.
Coach Sherman Kage said that the team struggled defensively on the first day of the tournament, when they faced Lyons and Limon. On Saturday they performed much better, but he noted that batting was their problem against Yuma and Akron.
“It’s always hard to take losses,” Kage said, “but to learn from mistakes, sometimes the loss is worth it.” Heading into the heart of the schedule, he is confident that the team will bounce back and play some better games.
Tournament games each had a 75-minute time limit.
Holyoke 0, Lyons 13
Friday morning, Lyons beat Holyoke 13-0 after four and half innings of play. Shianne Willmon managed to hit a single, but otherwise, Holyoke posted no offensive stats.
Lyons scored one run in the first inning. The Dragons held them in the second, but in each of the third and fourth innings, they scored six runs.
Sarah Razo pitched four innings. She struck out one batter and walked six. She gave up 14 hits and 13 earned runs.
Holyoke 0, Limon 15
In the Dragons’ second game of the day, Limon won 15-0 after four innings.
This time, it was Haley Mavis who had a single, and Sirissa Casady took a base on balls. Neither led to runs, however, and the Dragons saw a shutout.
Limon scored two runs in the first inning, followed by six, four and three runs in the remaining innings.
Razo pitched the first three innings, and Rebecca Owens pitched at the end.
Holyoke 4, Yuma 1
Back for a second day of competition, the Dragons won their first game of the season against Yuma, 4-1, after four and a half innings.
After shutting down Yuma’s first three batters, Holyoke scored its first run. Julia Casady hit a single and stole the remaining bases for the run. Molly Brown also hit a single and stole one, but was left on base.
