Dragon tracksters round the corner, look ahead to state competition

All-Conference athletes announced

Due to a slight schedule change, Holyoke hosted two track meets back to back last week, and thanks to nice weather, it was a chance for many athletes to improve their times, distances and heights late in the season in hopes of qualifying for the state meet May 19-21 in Lakewood.

“The good weather was a huge change of pace for everyone,” said coach Corey Koberstein, noting that the HWAY Invitational Friday, May 6, was a bit nicer than the league meet Saturday, May 7.

“A lot of our events moved up in the standings over the weekend,” he said. The team is trying to solidify their rankings among other 2A schools in the state because at the end of the regular season, only the top 18 in each event will get to compete at state. Even one second or a fraction of an inch could help them move up at this point in the season.

Holyoke athletes have two more chances this week to qualify. They competed at Akron on Tuesday, May 10, in a meet that was postponed from earlier in the season. A few from the team will also be traveling to Longmont on Friday, May 13. Koberstein said this meet is so big that athletes had to have a certain time, distance or height in their events to be able to participate.
