Dragon volleyball sets up for season
Holyoke High School volleyball is serving up a great roundup of games for Dragon fans this year, with the majority of their 2017 games on their home court.
Team members, coaches and fans are getting pumped up for the first game of the season next Tuesday, Aug. 29, at home against Akron. The 4 p.m. action begins with C team followed by junior varsity and varsity.
Leading the team are five returning letterwinners, including senior Grace Dille, juniors Savannah Burris and Kaylee Camblin, and sophomores Emily Jelden and Taeryn Trumper.
Stepping into the role of head coach this year is Hannah Petersen, a social studies teacher at Holyoke JR/SR High.
She said she sees lots of potential in this group of girls, noting that if they want to go far this season, they must stay disciplined and stick to the fundamentals of the game.
Petersen wants to focus on team unity this year as well as making sure the girls are having fun.
The 27-year-old grew up watching volleyball and started playing in fifth grade. As a high school athlete at Mountain View in Loveland, Petersen’s team won the state championship her freshman and senior years while earning runner-up honors her sophomore and junior years. She went on to play as a setter and libero at Bethany College in Kansas for one year.
Petersen began her volleyball coaching career at age 19 and has experience with middle schoolers, high schoolers and club volleyball players. She has been a JV coach at Poudre High School in Fort Collins, and her last four years were at Mountain View as a varsity assistant and C and D team coach.
Also joining the HHS coaching staff this year are assistants Ashley Hoffner and Maddie King.
