Dragons’ winning record continues in Akron doubleheader
After the second doubleheader of their season, Holyoke High School baseball is 4-0. On March 24, the Dragons traveled to Akron, where they won the first game 11-5. In the second game of the day, HHS secured a 14-3 win after just five innings. Coach Sam Distefano said that overall, it was a good team win.
Holyoke 11, Akron 5
In Saturday’s first game, Akron jumped ahead early, putting three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. They maintained that 3-0 lead until the Dragons got on the board in the third inning. HHS even managed to pull ahead 4-3 before Akron went back to bat.
In the bottom of the third, Akron tied it up, and the score remained 4-4 until the bottom of the fifth, where Akron pulled ahead by one.
HHS dug deep in the final two innings and managed to turn the game around. In the sixth, they scored three, and they added four more in the seventh. All the while, the Dragons held Akron at their previously scored five runs, and HHS posted an 11-5 win.
At bat, Slaten Burris hit a triple and a single in Saturday’s first game. Seth Watson hit a double and a single as well. Jesus Trejo, Tate Dille and Blake Mosenteen each hit two singles. Burris posted three RBIs, Mosenteen two, and Watson and Deaver one apiece. Burris also stole two bases, Mosenteen one and Omar Millan one.
Caleb Deaver pitched 4.1 innings, facing 24 batters. He struck out seven, walked four, and allowed six hits and two earned runs. Trejo pitched 2.2 innings, facing 14 batters. He struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits.
“I’m glad we won,” Distefano said, “and I like our growing depth at several positions.”
