Dragons 1-4 in dual tourney

Six Dragons competed in the Jan. 25 Platte Valley dual wrestling tournament in Kersey, winning one dual while losing four.

As a young team that is still growing, mat experience is key, and coach Dusty McConnell said the Platte Valley event was a really good tournament for that reason.

Holyoke defeated Akron 24-12 in the final dual of the day. The Dragons suffered losses to Florence, Evergreen, Highland and Rye.

Highland is ranked seventh in 2A and will be a very tough team in the Dragon regionals, as well as at state, noted McConnell. Akron will also compete in the same regional as Holyoke and Highland. While Rye is also classified 2A, the Thunderbolts compete in a different region.

Florence wrestles in 3A, while Evergreen is a 4A school.

Miguel Soto, at 145 lbs., and Nain Vasquez, at 160 lbs., both earned wins in actual matches wrestled. Others earned team points in wins by forfeit at last Saturday’s tourney.
