Dragons 4th at Wray Invite
Only 1.5 points behind Sedgwick County-Fleming, the Dragon wrestling team captured fourth-place team honors at the Bob Smith Wrestling Invitational in Wray Saturday, Dec. 16.
“Awesome, awesome, awesome,” is how coach Dusty McConnell described the Dragon wrestling. “The whole team did a great job — I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said McConnell, acknowledging how they stepped up and battled all day long.
Leading Holyoke’s 102-point effort were Jesus Trejo (138 lbs.) and Antoni Martinez (195 lbs.) who both earned runner-up honors in the tourney. Additionally, Deacon Dittmer finished third at 152 lbs.
Five Dragons claimed fourth-place medals, including Jessy Mosqueda (106 lbs.), Anthony Rojo (113 lbs.), Remington Hielscher (126 lbs.), Luis Chafino (145 lbs.) and Andy Lopez (182 lbs.).
A number of regional match-ups were seen Saturday, which is helpful in moving forward in the season.
Wray won the tourney with 232 points, followed by St. Francis, Kansas, 110, Sedgwick County-Fleming 103.5, Holyoke 102, Yuma 81, Akron 76, Limon 65, Merino 63.5, Wray X 63, Brewster, Kansas, 20, Littleton 20, Yuma X 17, Byers 15 and Stratton 10.
