Dragons add 6-point win over Wray Eagles
Jan. 9 saw another close basketball game for Holyoke’s varsity boys. Playing in Wray, the Dragons came out on top 63-57 in the nonconference competition.
Wray’s offensive strategies paired with their size pose some challenges for HHS, Dille explained. “I thought our kids did a nice job feeling out Wray and adjusting defensively to take away what they were trying to do,” he added.
Early in the game, it became clear that the two teams were fairly evenly matched. Holyoke scored 14 points in the first quarter, including a couple of 3s by Andy Dominguez. Wray, on the other hand, was more successful from the foul line and ended the period with a two-point lead.
In the second quarter, the Dragons outscored the Eagles, mostly due to quality outside shooting. Blake Mosenteen made a pair of 3-pointers, and Dominguez and Tate Dille each added another. By the end of the half, the score was tied at 29.
The second half of the game featured contributions from across the Holyoke roster in a real team effort. They scored 15 in the third quarter, including a fourth 3-pointer by Dominguez. Wray scored only seven.
In the fourth quarter, HHS held onto their lead, despite being outscored. Aided by the consistent free-throw shooting fans have come to expect from this year’s team, the Dragons added 19 points to the board. Wray posted 21 for a 63-57 Holyoke victory.
“Offensively, we made some shots and did a good job moving the ball and working for good shots,” Dille said. Leading HHS in points was Dominguez with 18, including 100 percent of his four free throws. Mosenteen scored 15, making five of five from the line. As a team, the Dragons shot 71 percent from the foul line, while Wray made only 43 percent.
Mason King led the team with six rebounds. Slaten Burris had the most assists with five. Mosenteen led with five steals. Dille had the most blocks with five. Coach Dille noted, “We need to continue to focus on rebounding as I felt like we did a nice job forcing tough shots, but didn’t finish out our defensive possessions like we needed to.”
