Dragons bring home big win from Wray; record is 7-0
There are only three Colorado 1A football teams that can still boast an undefeated record after last weekend’s football action. Holyoke, Strasburg and Florence are all 7-0 and vying for a position at the top.
Based on the CHSAANow.com football poll, Strasburg is in its fourth week of being ranked No. 1. Holyoke moved up to No. 2 this week, and Florence is No. 4.
On Oct. 18, the Dragons traveled to Wray to face the Eagles, who were 5-1 at the time. The highly anticipated game ended in a 34-14 win for Holyoke. In other North Central action last weekend, Yuma beat Wiggins 16-6 and Limon beat Burlington 38-21.
In league records, Holyoke and Limon are 3-0, Wray is 2-1, Yuma is 1-2, and Wiggins and Burlington are 0-3.
Despite the final 20-point win in last Friday’s Holyoke-Wray game, it was close competition. Fans of HHS have become accustomed to seeing the Dragons score early, but in this particular game, it didn’t happen until almost eight minutes in. Michael Ramos ran in a 3-yard touchdown, and Alexis Vega had a successful PAT kick, putting Holyoke ahead 7-0.
Then with 1:05 on the clock, Holyoke quarterback Miles Sprague made a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ramos. Another extra point by Vega doubled Holyoke’s score.
Down 14-0, the Eagles put up a fight in the second quarter. They managed a touchdown and a PAT kick with 6:17 on the clock. Wray kept Holyoke from advancing its score through the remainder of the half.
The second half of Friday’s game is when things got interesting. About five minutes in, Wray scored a touchdown and secured the extra point, making it a tied game. The Dragons fought hard to regain the lead, but the Eagles were fighting hard too. It came down to 2:09 left in the quarter before HHS could add another touchdown to the scoreboard. Sprague ran it in from the 1-yard line. The extra point was no good, and the Dragons led 20-14 going into the final quarter.
From there, Holyoke couldn’t be stopped.
