Dragons claim another overtime win in Yuma
For the second Friday night game in a row, the Holyoke boys basketball team tied up a game in the final seconds and dominated in overtime for a victory. This time, it was 42-37 in Yuma Friday, Jan. 20.
Some may have expected an easy victory in Yuma based on win-loss records. However, the Indians came to play.
“Yuma did a good job forcing us out of what we normally do,” said coach Scott Dille. “They outworked us and played the kind of game they needed to play to beat us.”
Still, as the basketball saying goes, shooting covers a multitude of sins. Despite a lack of assertiveness on offense and not enough communication on defense, Dille said the Dragons shot the ball well enough to make up for a variety of things that could have been done differently.
The game was back and forth the entire way, five points behind to five points ahead. M.J. Taylor scored Holyoke’s first points of the game with a 3-pointer, but the team finished the first quarter down 9-12.
Things were looking up in the second quarter. Gunnar Kroeger made the first two of his eventual six 3-pointers of the night to help the Dragons reach halftime up 19-18.
