Dragons fall 7-35 in first football game on the road
After a big homecoming win last week, Holyoke had difficulty getting on the scoreboard against Machebeuf Friday, Sept. 22, dropping the nonleague contest 7-35.
It was the first road game for the Dragons, who hosted in the first three outings of the season.
Early in the second quarter, when the Dragons trailed by a single point, it looked like it could be anybody’s ballgame.
The Dragons pulled off a huge goal-line stand with three and a half minutes remaining in the first half, but when Machebeuf intercepted an HHS pass to score with 22 seconds on the first-half clock, the tide turned.
Machebeuf dominated the second half 21-0, putting up three more touchdowns, a PAT kick and a two-point conversion to win the game 35-7.
Holyoke kicked off to Machebeuf to start the game. On their second series of downs, the Buffalo quarterback was sacked by Jesus Trejo for a fourth and long, leading to a Machebeuf punt.
The Dragons were penalized on the return with a personal foul to line up on their own 20-yard line. Three Holyoke first downs showed progressive movement into Buffalo territory. But Holyoke turned the ball over on downs on a fourth and 6, with Machebeuf’s offense on its own 25-yard line.
The Buffs advanced on a Dragon facemask penalty, then after three quick first downs, they put the first points on the board with a TD and a successful two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 2:36 on the first-quarter clock.
Returning the ensuing kickoff, the Dragons got a big break on a second and 14 with a Machebeuf penalty for roughing the passer. As the first quarter ended, the Dragon offense was on the 50-yard line.
One play and 50 yards later, on a touchdown effort between Blake Mosenteen and Marvin Canitz and a PAT kick by Alexis Vega, the Dragons trailed by one, 7-8.
The Buffs managed one first down before punting, and the Dragons found themselves punting four plays later.
