Dragons gear up for Estes Park after 39-6 loss to Meeker
A rough third quarter led to a 39-6 Dragon loss when the HHS football team hosted Meeker Saturday afternoon, Sept. 9.
Competing with high school volleyball in Sterling, softball in Brush and the local Kevin Scott golf and shoot out benefit, the football crowd was much smaller than usual.
A mere five-point deficit at halftime ended in a 33-point Dragon loss as Meeker scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter. Holyoke’s only score came on a beautiful 90-yard kickoff return by Blake Mosenteen in the second quarter.
Coach Dusty Sprague said the Dragons played championship football the first two quarters. He was proud of the way the kids battled and gave a hats off to Meeker for their performance. The Cowboys are a good team, he added.
Sprague said they will clean things up and focus on getting better. This week is homecoming which will be fun, but the team will stay focused and get ready to play Estes Park Friday night, he added.
Holyoke kicked off to the visitors to open the game Saturday afternoon, and the Cowboys marched it right down to scoring territory. Lined up on the Holyoke 11, the Meeker offense just couldn’t get the job done and opted for a 30-yard field goal on a fourth and 14. With 8:09 left in the first quarter, the visitors took a 3-0 lead.
Holyoke was forced to punt on its first offensive possession of the game and Meeker again marched the ball downfield to the Dragon 9-yard line.
A series of turnovers ended the first quarter and carried into the second period.
On fourth and 18, Meeker’s pass was intercepted by Dragon Marvin Canitz with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter. The Dragons did make one first down, but four plays after gaining possession by interception, Holyoke threw an interception which was picked off by Cowboy Stephen Walsh. Meeker faced a fourth and 6 as the quarter ended.
