Dragons lose district’s first-round game

It wasn’t a shock, but was still disappointing for many.

The Holyoke girls basketball team, seeded seventh in the 2A District 2 tournament, lost to second-seeded Wiggins last Tuesday, 20-50, to end the Dragons’ season.

Elise Krogmeier made two free throws on the game’s first possession. Holyoke only trailed 2-6 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, but once the Tigers got their transition game in high gear, they were tough to stop. Audrey Talavera hit a 3-pointer late in the first quarter to leave the Dragons trailing 5-13 heading into the second quarter.

Krogmeier completed a conventional 3-point play in the second quarter, while Anessa Colglazier added a bucket of her own.

Talavera and Krogmeier combined for Holyoke’s six third-quarter points and Krogmeiger added three more in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high 10 points.

Talavera scored seven points and Colglazier pulled down eight rebounds.

Each of the districts’ higher seeds won its first- round games. Top-seeded Merino beat Caliche 68-25, fourth-seeded Sedgwick County topped Wray 42-38 and third-seeded Akron beat Haxtun 46-26.

Sedgwick County upset Merino in the semifinals, 63-54, and Wiggins rolled to a 59-49 win over Akron.

Sedgwick County claimed the district championship with a 47-27 win over Wiggins, while third place went to Merino, 55-31, winning over Akron.

Merino has claimed the state tournament’s No. 1 seed. Sedgwick County is the second seed, Wiggins the ninth seed and Akron is 10th. Also making it from the 2A 2 district is Wray, the 15th seed; Haxtun, No. 25; and Caliche, No. 28.

The state tournament will begin Friday.

Seven teams from Holyoke’s district reaching the state tournament shows the strength of the Dragons’ schedule.
