Dragons open season on home mats Thursday

In front of a fan-limited home crowd, Dragon wrestlers opened their season Thursday, Jan. 28, in the old gym.

The first dual featured Holyoke and Burlington, with the Cougars finishing on top of the 60-12 team score.

Burlington faced a combined Akron/Merino team in the second dual of the night, followed by a 48-18 Akron/Merino win over Holyoke.

“Overall, we did a very good job with this short season that we’re having,” said coach Dusty McConnell.

He noted that the coaches are throwing a lot of technique at the wrestlers due to the short season. The team is also very young, but McConnell said they’re responding well.

Angel Martinez picked up the only match win for the Dragons when he pinned Akron’s Jason Kraft in 1:25 in a 170-lb. match. He got off to a quick start, earning a 6-0 lead in the first 18 seconds of the match, and finishing up in the first period.
