Dragons sweep Highland tourney

Holyoke’s girls basketball team inaugurated its season Nov. 30-Dec. 1 by winning the Canine Classic tournament championship with two solid victories over Liberty Common and Highland.
Coach John Baumgartner said the team got off to a slow start in its first matchup, but was able to get in the face of Liberty Common to pull out a decisive victory.
“Our first weekend wasn’t bad, although we still have some things to work on,” he said. “I think we really frustrated them, which is why they didn’t get many shots off.”
Holyoke’s 58-24 victory over Liberty Common on Nov. 30 set up their second game against the home team, which they clinched 52-33 to win the tournament.

The Dragons bounced back from a slow first quarter in which they tied Liberty Common at seven points to offensively and defensively stifle their opponents. After scoring 19 points in the second quarter for a 26-16 halftime lead, Holyoke charged ahead in the second half and racked up another 32 points, towering over its opponent by the final buzzer with a score of 58-24.
Kristin Vieselmeyer led the team in points with 12, including two for two from the line. Sarah Razo made all of the team’s three 3-pointers and scored a total of 11.
In rebounds, Victoria Race led with six. Vieselmeyer, Savannah Burris and Shianne Willmon each stole the ball three times, and Emily Jelden helped out with four assists and made four out of four shots from the line.
