Dragons swim state-qualifying times in 4 events at season opener dual

From the first event to the last, with two in between, Holyoke Lady Dragons swam state-qualifying times in four events at the season opener Thursday, Dec. 5, at Eaton.

Seniors Traeli Hutches and Lali Marquez teamed up with juniors Rylee Schneller and Haley Van Overbeke to win the 200-yard medley race in a state-qualifying time to open Thursday’s dual.

In the last event of the day, the same foursome won the 400-yard freestyle relay to qualify for 3A state competition.

Additionally, Schneller quickly secured her 3A state spots in both of her individual events, the 200 individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.

The teams were evenly matched, with Holyoke bringing home six first-place finishes in the 12 swimming events. The final two of the six found Hutches winning the 500-yard freestyle and Van Overbeke the 100-yard backstroke.

HHS does not have a diving team, so Eaton was able to secure a very close dual win with their two divers.
