Following 8th win, Holyoke looks ahead to Nov. 1 Limon game

This weekend marks the final regular-season games in Colorado 1A high school football. For the Holyoke Dragons and the Limon Badgers, it’s a big one. HHS will host the game Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., and both teams are going into it with impressive records.

Within the North Central league, both Holyoke and Limon have already defeated each of the other four teams. In the season as a whole, Holyoke is 8-0 and Limon is 7-1. The Badgers are undoubtedly looking to defend their 2018 state title.

As the Colorado high school team with the most football championships in its history — a whopping 17 — it’s no surprise to see Limon looking to the post season. For Holyoke, however, the current strength of the football program has been several years in the making. Last year, HHS made it to the playoffs but lost a close game against Meeker in the first round.

Things are looking promising for the current Dragon team, and with 12 senior members, a lot of hours have been put in to get to this point.

Outside of the North Central league, Strasburg is another one of the big players in 1A football. It is the only team besides Holyoke with an 8-0 record, and the CHSAANow.com poll ranks Strasburg at No. 1. Holyoke is No. 2, and Limon is No. 3.

Holyoke’s 8-0 record is maintained after an Oct. 25 home game against Wiggins, which the Dragons won 49-8. The majority of the contest was spent in Tiger territory.

In the first quarter, Holyoke scored two touchdowns. They were made by Luis Chafino and Caleb Deaver. Four second-quarter Dragon TDs were scored by Seth Watson, Chafino, Blake Mosenteen and Chafino.

A running clock through the remainder of the game made the second half go by quickly, but Holyoke’s younger athletes got in some valuable playing time.
