Football ekes out a 7-6 win in Yuma

After the high scores Holyoke football has boasted throughout the first half of the 2018 season, more than a few Dragon fans were surprised to see their team put up just a single touchdown in Yuma last Friday, Sept. 28. Though it was the closest game of their season so far, the Dragons won 7-6, keeping their winning streak alive.
Last weekend marked the first of the five league games that make up the second half of the HHS football season. Though the Dragons went undefeated in their nonconference games, coach Dusty Sprague pointed out that Holyoke is in a tough league. Hosting Burlington next weekend, Holyoke will need to be prepared to face another good team.
In Yuma, the first quarter of the game came and went without either team scoring. It was Yuma’s homecoming, and they put up quite the fight.
With 8:50 on the clock in the second quarter, Blake Mosenteen made a 48-yard run for the first points of the game. Alexis Vega went on to make a successful PAT kick, putting the Dragons ahead 7-0. HHS maintained the lead throughout the half.
Penalties were the theme of the evening, and as a result, Holyoke had a tough time getting into a rhythm. It also put Yuma in prime scoring position in the third quarter, when the team put up a touchdown of its own. Fortunately for the Dragons, Jesus Trejo tore through the line to block the PAT kick, maintaining a narrow 7-6 lead for his team.
