Gering sweeps Dragon softball opener Saturday

Dragon softball opened the 2020 season with two losses at home against Gering, Nebraska, Saturday, Aug. 29.

Although Gering won both games, 10-0 and 24-10, the games provided the Dragons valuable insight as to where to focus their efforts for improvement.

“We had a hard time picking the ball up out of the hand of the pitcher,” coach Sherman Kage said, “and we weren’t making adjustments in the batter’s box in enough time.”

The Dragons had difficulty getting on base during Saturday’s first game. The team tallied one hit in the six-inning game, a double by Lauren Herman in the fourth inning. Holyoke’s two other base runners were Clover Adler and Emali Torres, who both reached on walks.

Gering was kept scoreless in the first inning, but they scored in each subsequent inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth and plated three runs to extend the lead to 10. The Dragons were unable to score in the bottom half of the sixth, and the game ended because of the mercy rule.
