Girls break SedgCo’s streak

The Lady Dragon basketball team sailed through last week with two more conference wins and two more W’s on their 10-0 season record.

After dominating Caliche 65-24 Tuesday evening, Holyoke handed Sedgwick County its first loss of the season with a solid 64-44 win Friday.

Coach John Baumgartner said he knew Sedgwick County would be a big test. “I thought our kids stepped up to the challenge,” he said.

Holyoke 65, Caliche 24

Due to a burst pipe issue at Caliche, the game Tuesday, Feb. 16, was unexpectedly moved to Holyoke.

The Lady Dragons didn’t waste any time. They pushed their way to a 20-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and outscored Caliche 16-12 in the second for a 22-point lead at halftime.

Six Holyoke players got on the scoreboard in the third with a total of 22 points while the Dragon defense again kept Caliche to two points in the quarter. Both teams stayed in the single digits in the fourth period with the final buzzer marking Holyoke’s 65-24 win.

Baumgartner said this was the best the team has moved the ball offensively, noting the girls really worked hard to establish a good inside game.
