Girls cap off regular season with big win at Yuma

A big win at Yuma Thursday, Feb. 20, leaves the Holyoke Lady Dragon basketball team with a phenomenal 18-1 record at the end of the regular season.

“It was a good one to end on,” said coach John Baumgartner of the 47-20 victory. It’s not always easy for teams to get a win in Yuma’s so-called “Pit,” and the Holyoke girls certainly didn’t take the Indians lightly.

Baumgartner said that even though it was a non-conference game, the Lady Dragons used it to prepare for this weekend’s district tournament, and the win helped boost their confidence heading into post season.

The Holyoke girls are No. 1 in the district, which means they got a bye on Tuesday and will automatically have a spot in regionals. In this weekend’s district tournament, they will be playing for the chance to host regionals March 6-7.

As of Monday, Feb. 24, the state RPI rankings for 2A listed Holyoke in the No. 2 spot behind Limon, who also has an 18-1 record and is the only team to mark a win over Holyoke this year. Other top-ranked teams are No. 3 Meeker (17-2), No. 4 Heritage Christian (18-1), No. 5 Rocky Ford (18-1), No. 6 Rye (19-0), No. 7 Colorado Springs School (17-2) and No. 8 Del Norte (16-3).
