Girls claim back-to-back home wins
With back-to-back home games last Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15, the Lady Dragon basketball team didn’t disappoint the home crowd, with wins over Wray and Pine Bluffs, Wyoming.
Coach John Baumgartner said the green and gold fans provided a great atmosphere for Friday’s game against Wray — Holyoke’s first conference game of the season.
The Lady Dragons got off to a great start, outscoring Wray 16-9 in the first quarter.
“But Wray’s good,” said Baumgartner, “and they just kept coming back at us.” The Eagles outscored Holyoke by two points in the second period, but the Lady Dragons maintained a 23-18 lead at halftime.
Both teams put up 15 points in the third quarter, and some key 3-pointers and free throws in the final quarter gave Holyoke 18 points over Wray’s 13 and resulted in a 56-46 win for the Lady Dragons.
“It was a good win for us,” said Baumgartner.
He pointed out that four Holyoke athletes had points in double digits, which makes it hard to guard them.
Kristin Vieselmeyer was the top scorer with 18 points, followed by Elyce Talavera with 13, Elise Krogmeier with 12 and Lauren Herman with 10.
Three were also in double digits for rebounds, including Krogmeier with 13, Vieselmeyer with 12 and Herman with 11.
Herman also blocked three shots, Elyce Talavera led steals with five, and Audrey Talavera topped assists with four.
