Girls dispatch Akron, Caliche

Holyoke High School girls varsity basketball team triumphed easily in its Feb. 7 game against Akron, 59-32, and Feb. 8 game against Caliche, 65-11, continuing last week’s streak of wins against St. Francis, Kansas; Merino and Wiggins.
On the Akron matchup,  coach John Baumgartner said the team wasted no time and kept control of the ball throughout, earning 51 rebounds and outscoring Akron in three quarters.
“I thought we got the ball off the floor quickly,” he said. “Akron’s not a bad team, and they’ve got some shooters.”
He also praised cooperation within the team. Ten players earned points, and 15 suited up for the game.
“We distributed the basketball really well; we were very unselfish,” he said. “We got a lot of players in the game.”
Baumgartner said Caliche gave the team another chance to get young players in the game and prepare for the upcoming district tournament.
“It’s good to see kids stepping up and knocking down shots,” he said. “Districts are going to be a lot different, but hopefully we can keep getting better.”
